Challenges and Opportunities For Strengthening Poverty Alleviation Through Tourism Relevant Yemen
This article, presents an assessment of overall challenges and opportunities for strengthening poverty alleviation through tourism that are relevant to Yemen as a whole and rural areas in particular. It starts by viewing the situation in country in general and the three protected areas, JBNP, AWPA and Hawf protected areas in particular in the light of principles and mechanisms identified by World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It then comments on some of the underlying ecotourism challenges before addressing some specific opportunities which appears to be more generic across PAs and could benefit from a national as well as local response. Finally, it makes some recommendations for the main beneficiaries and stakeholders on their approach to structures, projects and relationships. The assessment is based on a combination of discussions within the Ministry of Tourism (MT) , with external agencies and with private sector tour operator representatives, together with impressions gained from the field visits and throughout the mission.
